LT02 - Doing Penance
Scripture of the Week
Those who desire life and desire to see good days, let them keep their tongues from evil and their lips from speaking deceit; let them turn away from evil and do good; let them seek peace and pursue it. For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer. — I Peter 3:10-13

What do you see in the image on the front page? Can you tell this part of Luther’s story?
Tuesday Catechism Encounter:
At the monastery, Luther tried to be holy, perfect and worthy of God’s love. But no matter how much he tried, he failed. He felt he was an unworthy sinner. Open your Small Catechism or go on line to Part II: Luther’s teaching on the First Article of the Apostles’ Creed. Take turns reading through and reflecting on each gift God gives us. What does Luther suggest we owe God in return for all these undeserved gifts?

Friday Role Play:
Act out the scene on the cover. Martin has just taken vows to become a monk. He feels guilty and unloved by God. He is afraid that God will punish him for his sins. Maybe if he works hard he can earn God’s love? What can you tell him? Act it out.
